RROSE Framework
The proposed framework provides key principles of how to integrate a circular approach in the refugee camps and explores practical examples that can be implemented to create healthier environments in temporary settlements.
The primary purpose of the refugee camps is to be a temporary settlement where they can either find a new home or be able to go back to their hometown. Still, this temporary settlement has become a home for some of the refugees for generations. This settlement has been designed and created for temporary use only, causing the low quality of life. The environmental
conditions such as clean water, privacy, and healthier materials are not met. The main role of the government agencies is to provide funding. Still, this funding is not adequately distributed
for the proper purpose since they are not constantly present in the refugees' camps to examine and see what is needed. This is when volunteer groups and nonprofit organizations
come to play. They must support the community with limited funding, donations, and what is locally available.
In this settlement, it is necessary to implement a circular design approach because of the importance of cost and to provide a real safe haven for the one in need. Nowadays, finding raw materials is difficult and more expensive, making it imperative to find alternative solutions. Like the architect, Shigeru Ban, their firm explores opportunities to design products and buildings that can be reused and repurposed. In addition, more independent designers and researchers are trying to implement healthier designs. Yet, there is no particular process in the refugee camps on how this settlement can have and meet a healthier environment.
A circular concept offers the opportunity to create a healthier environment at a low cost and utilize most of the materials available. This concept lowers the impact on the environment
and can maintain a circular economy within the community. The proposed framework provides key principles for integrating a circular approach in the refugee camps. It explores practical examples that can be implemented to create a healthier environment in this temporary settlement.
